Psalm 23 – The Lord’s My Shepherd

Psalm 23, “The Lord’s My Shepherd”, is one of the most well-known psalms in the Bible.
It is generally believed to be written by King David. David had a deep and personal relationship with God. He had experienced many ups and downs in his life, including being a shepherd in his youth, facing battles and political struggles, and times of fleeing and hiding. Drawing from his own experiences as a shepherd taking care of his flock, he used the metaphor to describe God’s care for His people. In the psalm, he expresses the trust and security that comes from knowing God is like a good shepherd who leads, protects, and provides for His people, guiding them through the difficulties and uncertainties of life, and ensuring their well-being in both this life and the afterlife.

English Lyrics
Psalm 23

The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green: He leadeth me
the quiet waters by
My soul He doth restore again
and me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness
ev’n for His own name’s sake
Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale
Yet will I fear no ill
For Thou art with me, and Thy rod
and staff, my comfort still
My table Thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes
My head Thou dost with oil anoint
And my cup overflows
Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me
And in God’s house for evermore
My dwelling-place shall be
