When Hope Feels Lost: 5 Powerful Psalms to Anchor Your Soul

5. Psalm 147: When You Need to Remember God’s Resume
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (v.3)
After my sister’s overdose, hope felt like a cruel joke. At her funeral, I opened Psalm 147 randomly and almost laughed at v.4: “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” “Cool, God—You name stars but let my sister die?”
But then I kept reading:
- v.3: He’s a trauma surgeon
- v.6: He lifts the humble (not the hashtag-blessed)
- v.11: He delights in those who “put their hope in His unfailing love”—not their perfect faith
My grief hack:
I made a “God’s resume” poster:
- Skills: Heart-mending, star-naming, hope-installing
- References: Creation (v.4), broken people (v.3), me
- Availability: 24/7 (v.19)
Now, when grief sucker-punches me, I:
- Blast “Build a Boat” by Colton Dixon (it samples Psalm 147:5)
- Text my support squad: “Send me one star emoji for every tear”
- Light a candle named “Balm of Gilead” (Bath & Body Works, thank me later)
